Here's the poem.
Caxtons are mechanical birds with many wings

A Martian Sends a Postcard Home
by Craig Raine
Caxtons are mechanical birds with many wings
and some are treasured for their markings—
they cause the eyes to melt
or the body to shriek without pain.
or the body to shriek without pain.
I have never seen one fly, but
sometimes they perch on the hand.
sometimes they perch on the hand.
Mist is when the sky is tired of flight
and rests its soft machine on ground:
and rests its soft machine on ground:
then the world is dim and bookish
like engravings under tissue paper.
like engravings under tissue paper.
Rain is when the earth is television.
It has the property of making colours darker.
It has the property of making colours darker.
Model T is a room with the lock inside—
a key is turned to free the world
a key is turned to free the world
for movement, so quick there is a film
to watch for anything missed.
to watch for anything missed.
But time is tied to the wrist
or kept in a box, ticking with impatience.
or kept in a box, ticking with impatience.
In homes, a haunted apparatus sleeps,
that snores when you pick it up.
that snores when you pick it up.
If the ghost cries, they carry it
to their lips and soothe it to sleep
to their lips and soothe it to sleep
with sounds. And yet, they wake it up
deliberately, by tickling with a finger.
deliberately, by tickling with a finger.
Only the young are allowed to suffer
openly. Adults go to a punishment room
openly. Adults go to a punishment room
with water but nothing to eat.
They lock the door and suffer the noises
They lock the door and suffer the noises
alone. No one is exempt
and everyone’s pain has a different smell.
and everyone’s pain has a different smell.
At night, when all the colours die,
they hide in pairs
they hide in pairs
and read about themselves—
in colour, with their eyelids shut.
in colour, with their eyelids shut.

ReplyDeleteNoora you get one point for Caxton.
ReplyDeleteMr A
A caxton causes eyes to melt because reading can make your eyes hurt or too much reading can make your eyes feel like they are melting. I am guessing they make your body shriek without pain because a book an be violent like when someone gets stabbed in a book your body kind of shrieks but no pain these were guesses and only guesses
ReplyDelete1. I think the title means that a Martian who comes to Earth and says what they see in Earth and what they are called in a letter home again just a guess
ReplyDelete5. This has to do with critical thinking because critical thinking means thinking carefully thinking and using the skills and knowledge you know to find the answer so we had to do that to try to find the meaning of the poem
ReplyDeleteagain this was just a guess
3. AGAIN I am only guessing but a model T is a car with a lock inside meaning a car door that can be opened to free you to go or 'move' wherever you want
ReplyDeleteagain its only a guess
4. I think the last two stanzas are about when at night everything is dark so the colours are gone our two eyes close together so a pair that hides and reading about themselves in colour with their eyelids shut meaning when humans dream when they are asleep
ReplyDeleteagain just a guess and I think I've attempted them all
