Last Questions for 2011 Monday Dec 12

Grace has already won this competition, so it’s up to Noora and Felix to fight over the Silver and Bronze Certificates!

Each Science Myth below needs to be fully explained as to WHY IT IS A MYTH.
Each is 1 point.

1.   The human body “pops” like a balloon when exposed to the vacuum of space.
2.   If you drop food on the floor, the “five second rule” means its safe to eat the food.
3.   Once you kill a brain cell, for example banging your head heavily, these brain cells are lost forever and won’t regenerate.
4.   When meteors enter the Earth’s atmosphere the heat generated by friction causes them to heat up.
5.   There is no gravity in space.

Good luck

  1. 1)"Like any properly trained man in good health, he could survive in vacuum for at least a minute — if he had time to prepare for it. But there had been no time; he could only count on the normal fifteen seconds of consciousness before his brain was starved and anoxia overcame him."

  2. 2)it’s when you drop some food on the floor or ground or somewhere else that is probably pretty gross, and if you pick it up before 5 seconds have passed, it’s still considered “safe” to eat (thought whether or not it’s POLITE to eat it, is probably another issue).

  3. 5)There is gravity in space, it's just that the effects of gravity are relative to the mass and body being influenced
a human being doesn't have enough mass in outer space to be greatly influenced by the gravity of the sun, on Earth the centrifugal force of the Earth creates the gravity that influences

  4. 4)Meteors are glowing fragments of rock matter from outside the Earth's atmosphere that burn and glow upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. They are more commonly known as shooting stars. Some meteors, particularly larger ones, may survive passage through the atmosphere to become meteorites, but most are small objects that burn up completely in the atmosphere. They are not, in reality, shooting stars.During certain times of the year, the Earth's orbit passes through a belt of high concentration of cosmic dust and other particles, and many meteors are observed. The Perseid Shower, results from passage through one of these belts every year in mid-August, and Leonid shower occurs in mid-November.

  5. no no i try again here
1), a human can survive for 15 – 30 seconds in outer space as long as they breathe out before the exposure (this prevents the lungs from bursting and sending air into the bloodstream). After 15 or so seconds, the lack of oxygen causes unconsciousness which eventually leads to death by asphyxiation.
2)This is utter bunkum which should be obvious to most readers. If there are germs on the floor and the food lands on them, they will immediately stick to the food. Having said that, eating germs and dirt is not always a bad thing as it helps us to develop a robust immune system. I prefer to have a “how-tasty-is-it” rule: if it is something really tasty, it can sit there for ten minutes for all I care – I will still eat it.
3)The reason for this myth being so common is that it was believed and taught by the science community for a very long time. But in 1998, scientists at the Sweden and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California discovered that brain cells in mature humans can regenerate. It had previously been long believed that complex brains would be severely disrupted by new cell growth, but the study found that the memory and learning center of the brain can create new cells – giving hope for an eventual cure for illnesses like Alzheimer’s.
5)there is gravity in space – a lot of it. The reason that astronauts appear to be weightless because they are orbiting the earth. They are falling towards the earth but moving sufficiently sideways to miss it. So they are basically always falling but never landing. Gravity exists in virtually all areas of space. When a shuttle reaches orbit height (around 250 miles above the earth), gravity is reduced by only 10%.
4)(becoming a meteor), it is actually the speed compressing the air in front of the object that causes it to heat up. It is the pressure on the air that generates a heat intense enough to make the rock so hot that is glows brilliantly for our viewing pleasure (if we are lucky enough to be looking in the sky at the right time). We should also dispel the myth about meteors being hot when they hit the earth – becoming meteorites. Meteorites are almost always cold when they hit – and in fact they are often found covered in frost.

  6. Yes you got them all Noora---but be aware---you must not just copy and paste from the internet. In future all answers MUST be in your own words.
